Crisis is looming in Dari Chiefdom, Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, over the vacant stool of Sangarin Dari. This comes after the recent demise of Mr. Joseph A. Angulu. The three ruling houses, particularly the Kutiri Kunka ruling house, have accused government officials of attempting to manipulate the selection process for selfish interests.
Addressing journalists in Lafia, Prince Engineer Lawrence Ada’a Dari (KSM), Yeriman Dari and a contestant for the stool, alleged that the State Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs is attempting to bypass the traditional patrilineal system by favoring matrilineal candidates.
He appealed to Governor Abdullahi A. Sule to intervene and ensure adherence to due process.
“All we, as ruling houses, particularly the Kutiri Kunka Ruling House, are saying is that the government should give Caesar what belongs to him. The late Joseph A. Angulu was not heir apparent from any of the ruling houses; he was imposed on our people, and we fear the same mistake may be repeated,” Prince Lawrence said.
He further called on Kokona Local Government officials, members of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, and traditional leaders to respect the customs of the chiefdom and ensure that only eligible candidates from the ruling houses are considered.
Another contender for the throne, Prince Elijah A. Aso, echoed these concerns, accusing certain individuals, including John Mamman, of scheming to impose non-royal candidates on the people.
The Dari Chiefdom was established in 2019 during the administration of former Governor Tanko Al-Makura.
The stool of Sangarin Dari became vacant after the death of Mr. Joseph A. Angulu, who succeeded the first Sangarin Dari, Mr. Madaki Yanki, from the Kutiri Kunka Ruling House.
The ruling houses argue that the late Angulu’s appointment was irregular and demand that such errors not be repeated.
