The Court of Appeal in Abuja has ordered the adoption of harmonised briefs in the ongoing dispute over the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a step seen as crucial to delivering a final judgment on the matter.
At Tuesday’s sitting, party leaders including governors and the faction led by national chairman Tanimu Turaki (SAN) were present. The Turaki-led group has been contesting the validity of the November 2025 convention, which was nullified by a Federal High Court ruling in Ibadan.
The appellate court’s directive seeks to consolidate appeals arising from three conflicting judgments delivered by different Federal High Court divisions. While two Abuja rulings barred Turaki’s faction from holding the convention, the Ibadan judgment went further by declaring the convention invalid and restraining elected officials from acting as national officers.
The conflicting decisions have deepened PDP’s internal crisis, splitting the party into rival factions. The Turaki camp insists it represents the authentic leadership, while a rival group loyal to Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, continues to challenge its legitimacy.
A three-member panel of the Court of Appeal has now directed all parties to align their processes for a unified hearing. Both factions are expected to formally adopt their briefs on Thursday, after which the court will fix a date for judgment.
The PDP crisis dates back to the aftermath of the 2023 general election, when disagreements over zoning, governors’ influence, and control of the party secretariat escalated into parallel meetings, suspensions, and multiple court cases. Wike’s open support for President Bola Tinubu during the election further intensified divisions.
Repeated reconciliation efforts by the party’s Board of Trustees have failed, leaving the courts to determine the legitimate leadership. The outcome of the Appeal Court case will not only settle the party’s leadership question but also shape its internal balance of power ahead of upcoming governorship contests and the 2027 general election.
