A United States Congressman, Riley M. Moore, has countered denials by the Nigerian government on alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria.
He insisted that available data showed that about 7,000 Christians have been killed across the country this year.
Moore, a Republican member of the U.S. parliament, spoke in an interview with Fox News on Monday.
He said the alleged genocide was a tragedy that has been going on for decades without anyone talking about it.
A few weeks ago, Moore and Senator Ted Cruz had called on the U.S. government to designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), over the alleged massacre of Christians in Nigeria.
However, the Nigerian government had on different occasions dismissed the claim and insisted that the security crisis in the country does not target a particular religion.
But in the interview, Moore insisted that Christians are being persecuted and killed in Nigeria, especially in the northern regions, saying about 35 Nigerian Christians are “murdered per day”.

“7,000 Christians have been murdered in Nigeria this year. That’s 35 Christians murdered per day. It’s a tragedy that cannot be ignored any longer,” Moore said.
“That’s why I sent a letter to @SecRubio to redesignate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern. It’s time we took a stand to defend our brothers and sisters in Christ.”
When asked if the killing of Christians in Nigeria can be categorized as genocide, the US lawmaker added:
“A real genocide is happening in Nigeria — Christians are being slaughtered, churches burned, families wiped out for their faith in Christ. 50,000-100,000 have been killed since 2009, 7,000 this year alone, 35 on average everyday.
“The government in Nigeria is complicit in the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Christ. The silence is shameful.
“This is why I am urging @SecRubio to designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern.”
