US President Donald Trump has slammed Federal Reserve Chairman Jay Powell, saying he knows much more about exchange rates than the Washington-born investment banker.
Trump addressed a large crowd of his supporters in Warren, Michigan, on Tuesday as he marked his 100 days in office.
He defended his handling of America’s economy, despite criticism, especially over the imposition of tariffs against nearly every nation in the world.
Trump told supporters in Michigan, “Inflation is basically down, and interest rates came down despite the fact that I have a Fed person who’s not really doing a good job, but I won’t say that.
“I want to be very nice. I want to be very nice and respectful to the Fed. You’re not supposed to criticize the Fed; you’re supposed to let him do his own thing, but I know much more about interest rates than he does, believe me.”
The 72-year-old Powell has been Federal Reserve chairman since 2018.
He was in charge and managed the 2020 COVID-19 and 2022 inflation crises.
He has occasionally had spats with President Trump.
