Varsity workers begin strike over unpaid salaries

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of non-teaching staff unions in federal universities, comprising the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), on Monday commenced an indefinite nationwide strike over unpaid salaries.

Peters Adeyemi, NASU General Secretary, and Mohammed Ibrahim, SSANU President, signed the circular directing the strike.

“It is on record that JAC of NASU and SSANU has issued multiple notices to the government to redress this ugly situation. However, the sincerity of government to our cause is in doubt,” the circular read.

The strike follows the non-payment of four months’ withheld salaries of NASU and SSANU members, despite President Bola Tinubu’s approval of the release of four months of withheld salaries for members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in October 2023.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration had in 2022 withheld salaries of university staff who participated in an eight-month strike at the time.

The strike involving non-teaching staff overseeing administrative operations like admissions, examinations, maintenance, and security is expected to disrupt academic activities in federal universities.
