Violence against women, girls negates principles of natural justice – Yobe govt

The Yobe State government through the Commission of Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Abdullahi Bego, says violence against women and girls in any society negates the principles of natural justice.

Bego, who represented Governor Mai Mala Buni, stated this on Monday at the flag-off of an annual sensitization programme against gender-based violence titled “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence” organised by the State Ministry of Women Affairs, in collaboration with international Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and domestic Civil Society Organizations (CBOs).

He noted that part of protecting women and girls against all forms of violence relates to improving their access to education and economic empowerment opportunities, to make them able to cater for their personal needs.

“The idea that women and girls deserve to be protected – and must be protected at all times and under all circumstances (by society and the law) – is an idea grounded in our religious traditions whether, Muslim or Christian. It’s also an idea grounded in common sense”, he said.

This, according to him, was the reason Gov. Buni established seven Government Girls Senior Day Secondary Schools in parts of the State as a means of promoting girl-child education.

He added that in the area of agriculture and empowerment, Buni also ensured women’s inclusion in the distribution of farming equipment and implements and empowerment support items.

“This stems from the governor’s firm belief that there is no society that can achieve greatness without the involvement of women,” he said.
