The Jigawa State Government has disclosed that properties worth N5 billion were destroyed during the nationwide protests in August 2024.
This was revealed by the Chairman of the fact-finding committee on the protests, Bello Fanini, while presenting the committee’s report to Governor Umar Namadi at the Government House in Dutse the state capital.
Fanini, stated that the destroyed properties included those belonging to the federal, state, and local governments, as well as private individuals and businesses.
Breaking down the losses, he said, “The Jigawa State Government suffered damages amounting to ₦2.8 billion, while the Federal Government and its agencies recorded losses of ₦1.07 billion. Private individuals and companies lost ₦707 million, local governments recorded damages worth ₦364 million, and the All Progressives Congress, APC, incurred losses totaling over ₦49 million.”
The committee also made several recommendations aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future. Among the key recommendations was the need for the state government to compensate companies and individuals who suffered property losses during the protests.
In response, Governor Umar Namadi expressed his gratitude to the committee for their dedication and assured them that the government would thoroughly review the report and implement the proposed recommendations.
It will be recalled that Governor Namadi inaugurated the fact-finding committee to investigate the root causes of the August 1, 2024, protests in Jigawa State.
