Chinedu Uburu, chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Ebonyi, has revealed that workers who died in 2009 are still drawing salaries from the states local government coffers. Uburu disclosed this during a courtesy visit by the executives of the Ebonyi chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), led by Samson Nwafor, in Abakaliki. He explained that the anomaly was discovered during the ongoing verification exercise at the various local government areas in the state. The ALGON chairman expressed concerns about the local governments' inability to pay salaries due to the federal governments increase in the minimum wage. He urged workers who have yet to receive their payments to remain patient. The verification exercise is not targeted at anyone. Workers dont realise that council chairmen are trying to help them, Uburu said. Last year, the president signed the minimum wage bill into law, and with the current number of staff, we cant even pay salaries. Uburu also commended the leadership of the NUJ for upholding professionalism, noting that the media plays a vital role in disseminating accurate information to the public. In response, Nwafor emphasized the unions commitment to fostering a healthy relationship between journalists and the government. He assured ALGON of the NUJs continued support for efforts aimed at sustainable development, while highlighting the medias role in serving the public interest. Journalism is no longer about attacking the government; its about supporting it, advising when necessary, and ensuring the states progress, Nwafor said. We are part of the society and our work should aim to contribute to the betterment of Ebonyi. The post Workers who died in 2009 still receiving salaries in Ebonyi - Local Governments of Nigeria chairman appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
