The Benue State Goverment has said Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, from the Yelwata massacre in Guma Local Government Area will begin returning home from their temporary camp at the Makurdi International Market on Saturday.

The planned return to their homes is as result of a pledge by international partners to support the return effort by restoring key social amenities destroyed during the recent attack on the community by suspected herders.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Aondowase Kunde, during a coordination meeting with humanitarian stakeholders in Makurdi.

Participants at the meeting include the International Organisation for Migration, IOM, United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, World Health Organisation, WHO, and the United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, among others.

Kunde explained that the state had received confirmation from the accreditation committee that Yelwata is now secure for return.

He said such a position is reinforced after consultations with security agencies and development partners.

A return committee, chaired by Kunde, has been tasked with assessing the state of water, sanitation, health, and education facilities in the community to ensure a safe and dignified return process.

Kunde said, “Vehicles and trucks will be deployed over the weekend to convey the returnees and their belongings.

He expressed appreciation to Governor Hyacinth Alia for his commitment to the welfare of displaced persons, noting that the governor has mobilised resources to support the return and reintegration process.
