Nollywood actress and filmmaker Mary Remmy Njoku has ignited widespread debate on social media after asserting that there is “no such thing as an independent woman,” arguing that human beings are not wired to navigate life entirely on their own. Her remarks, shared via Instagram on Wednesday night, quickly gained traction and drew mixed reactions from followers.
In the post, Njoku suggested that independence is often misunderstood and romanticised. According to her, many women become “independent” not by deliberate choice, but as a response to the absence of dependable people in their lives. She maintained that self-reliance frequently emerges from unmet support systems rather than a genuine desire for isolation.
The actress emphasised that dependence and partnership are fundamental aspects of human existence, noting that everyone, regardless of gender, needs support at different stages of life. Her comments appeared to challenge prevailing narratives that equate independence with strength while overlooking the emotional and social costs that may accompany it.

”There is really no such thing as an independent woman. Independence is not a preference; it is a usual response. No human truly wants to do life alone.
”We become independent when we don’t have dependable people around us. So, before labeling a woman ‘independent’ or ‘overly self-sufficient,’ it is worth asking why. Are you dependable? Because when someone shows up consistently, nobody chooses isolation.” She wrote.
Njoku’s opinion has since polarised public discourse online. Some users agreed with her perspective, describing it as a realistic reflection of societal pressures and broken support structures. Others, however, criticised the statement, arguing that independence does not negate the desire for companionship or collaboration.
