Political Economist, Prof Pat Utomi, has asked for the return of the Electoral Act 2026 to the National Assembly.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s ‘The Morning Brief’, Prof Utomi charged the National Assembly to make laws that reflect what Nigerians want.
He was reacting to the Electoral Act Amendment which was passed the National Assembly and signed into law by President Bola Tinubu barely 24 hours after its passage.
DAILY POST reports that both the passage and the signing into law of the Electoral Act have sparked national debates in various quarters of the country.
Airing his own views, Utomi said, “It is imperative for progress in Nigeria that they return that so-called law to the National Assembly and make a law that reflects what the Nigerian people want.
“The last FCT Area Council elections, where I think the turnout was was something like 7% was the beginning of the ultimate indictment of politics in Nigeria.
“Now, when politics gets to a point that the people lose complete interest, they think politicians are a bunch of coup plotters who use their positions to prevent the will of the people from being known, they just ignore the system. When they ignore the system, invariably, something happens.”
