NELFUND extends student loan application deadline to Feb 27

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced an extension of the application deadline for the 2025/2026 academic session, moving it from January 31 to February 27, 2026.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, the Fund explained that the decision was taken to give prospective applicants more time to complete and submit their forms. Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, said the move was to ensure that no eligible student is excluded due to timing constraints.

Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NELFUND, Akintunde Sawyerr, added: “This extension reflects our commitment to inclusivity and access. We understand that some applicants may require additional time to complete their submissions, and this decision ensures that every eligible Nigerian student has a fair opportunity to benefit from the Fund.”

Students who have not yet applied or completed their applications were urged to take advantage of the new deadline. The Fund also assured that updates would continue to be shared through its official communication channels.

NELFUND was created to administer the Nigeria Student Loan Scheme, signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in April 2024. The scheme provides interest-free loans to students in public tertiary institutions to cover tuition and living expenses, with repayment required after graduation and employment.

Applications opened in May 2024, targeting students from low-income backgrounds to remove financial barriers to education. As of January 29, 2026, the total amount disbursed under the scheme stood at ₦174.56 billion.
