PDP Govs’ Forum blasts Fayose over remarks on Makinde–Tinubu meeting

The Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum (PDPGF) has strongly criticised former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, describing him as a “subsisting liability” to Nigerian politics.

This follows Fayose’s recent comments attacking Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over his meeting with President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement issued by its Director-General, Dr Emmanuel Agbo, on Wednesday, the Forum condemned Fayose’s remarks, warning that his partisan tirades demean Nigeria’s political culture and undermine governance.

Governor Makinde had met President Tinubu behind closed doors at the Presidential Villa on January 22 to discuss national and state issues. Fayose, however, alleged that Makinde was accompanied by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, suggesting Makinde was unwilling to face the President alone.

He further claimed Tinubu told Makinde he would only discuss governance matters, not political complaints, including Makinde’s earlier warning that Tinubu was trying to establish a one-party system.

The PDPGF dismissed Fayose’s claims, accusing him of seeking relevance after failed attempts to align with the Presidency. “Ordinarily, the Forum, like any sensible and focused group in Nigeria, would not join issues with characters like Fayose and confer on them the dignity they do not deserve. Nevertheless, it is exigent to respond to Fayose’s latest gaffe in order to draw attention to his degenerative public demeanour and the demeaning impact it is having on the image of Nigerian politics,” the statement read.

The Forum added: “His attribution of partisan motives to Makinde’s meeting with the President portrays Tinubu as a desperate leader whose sole objective is consolidating power. Fayose’s pathological tirade also suggests that the current leadership is focused only on political horse-trading, to the exclusion of governance and development.”

It further described Fayose as “more a liability than an asset to the country’s body politic,” accusing him of becoming a “self-appointed attack dog of the Villa” after failing to sell his services to the Presidency.

The PDPGF expressed regret over what it called the decline in the conduct of its former chairman and urged his associates to seek professional help for him. “Nigeria’s democracy can be harmed by elements like Fayose, who only find relevance in an atmosphere of partisan hate and crises. The PDPGF therefore calls on the Presidency to dissociate itself from unsolicited hounds like him for the sake of sanity and decency in politics,” the statement concluded.
