The trial of Mr. Umar Abubakar, who is facing allegations of job racketeering and forgery, has been postponed to June following his failure to appear before the Adamawa State High Court in Yola on Tuesday.
Mr. Abubakar, arrested by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in a 2022 sting operation, was arraigned on June 1, 2023, before Hon. Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman.
He is facing a three-count charge bordering on obtaining by false pretence, fraudulent document creation, and corruptly receiving a benefit in exchange for employment.
According to a statement signed by Demola Bakare, spokesperson for the ICPC on Thursday, the delay in the trial was caused by the defendant’s absence from court.
“Defence counsel, Mr. A.U. Sangere, informed the court that his client was unable to attend because he had travelled,” the statement said.
“He assured the court that the defendant would be present at the next sitting.”
ICPC prosecuting counsel, Mr. T.S. Iorngee, in response, requested that the court fix two clear dates to ensure the case is handled without further delay.
Justice Abdulrahman subsequently adjourned the matter to June 3 and 4, 2025, for continuation of the trial.
The ICPC alleges that in April 2022, Mr. Abubakar falsely claimed to have connections in the Presidency and induced one Mr. Kabiru Musa to pay N100,000 in exchange for a job placement at the Commission.
He was further accused of presenting a forged temporary appointment letter purportedly signed by the ICPC Chairman to deceive the victim.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to pursuing justice in the matter, stating that “no one should profit through fraudulent manipulation of public employment processes.”
