Troops of the Nigerian military under Operation Hadin Kai, in collaboration with the Nigerien Defence Force, have repelled an early morning attack by Islamic State of West Africa Province, ISWAP, terrorists on Mallamfatori, a strategic border town in Borno State.
The coordinated assault, which occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, was swiftly countered by Nigerian ground forces with aerial support from the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai and surveillance provided by the Nigerien Air Force.
According to a post by security analyst, Zagazola Makama on X, the joint military response inflicted heavy casualties on the terrorists, forcing them to retreat into nearby bushes.
Military sources confirmed that the intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, ISR, capabilities deployed by Nigerien forces played a key role in guiding the precision strikes and the troops’ successful pushback.
Mallamfatori, situated close to the Lake Chad Basin, is a critical location in the fight against insurgency in Nigeria’s North-East and the wider Lake Chad region.
Mop-up operations are still ongoing, and further details are expected as the security forces continue securing the area.
