Women saved Arsenal from embarrassment – Ian Wright knocks Mikel Arteta’s men

Ian Wright, a former Arsenal player, has aimed a subtle dig at Mikel Arteta’s men after the club’s women team won the Women’s UEFA Champions League trophy at the weekend.

Wright said Arsenal women’s team saved the Premier League North London club from ’embarrassment’ after their Champions League triumph.

Recall that a second half goal from Stina Blackstenius ensured Arsenal defeated Barcelona 1-0 at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon, Portugal, to lift the Champions League trophy on Saturday.

This comes after Arteta’s side ended the season without a trophy this term as the women’s Champion League trophy is the only silverware Arsenal won as a club this campaign.

When asked what the latest trophy means for the Gunners as a club, Wright told TNT Sports: “It has saved the club.

“The embarrassment of not getting anything this season when we played so well with the men.

“The ladies have saved the club. We have got something to celebrate.”

“Of course they need a parade,” Wright added.
